2020 Swinney Syrah

2020 Swinney Syrah

Ray Jordan, The West Australian Wine Guide 2022, November 2022

Wow. The colour will get you in immediately. Deep and dark with bright crimson hues. The nose is so seductive and engaging. Plum and spices with a fragrant hint of lavender. The palate is so brilliant. Smooth, rich and concentrated, yet with finesse and subtle expression as those spices and dried herbs lift and brighten the deeper plum fruit intensity. 96pts

From the fantastically farmed Swinney vineyard, syrah goes to older (mostly) larger format oak. Swinney for the winney.

Quite inky and dense, inward concentration in spades, blackcurrants, boot polish, charry woody spice, silty tannins and saline minerally detail going on. Firm texture in a way but lots of bouncy, bright fruit in that mix – tannins ripple glossy yet taut in the wine. Fresh but deep, dark, brooding too. Black olive, green herbs, the idea of how red earth tastes in this wine too. Serious red, seriously good. 94 pts

Tasting Notes
Deep and penetrating purple. Intense aromatic spice with blueberries, coal dust and a hint of wildness. Medium to full bodied, bright and expressive with satsuma plums, schezuan pepper and couverture. Inky and opulent with fine bony tannins supporting the fruit to a long finish.

Vineyard Notes
Dry-grown, vertically trellised Syrah with small parcels of fruit hand-picked from specific sites on our Swinney Wilson’s Pool and Powderbark vineyards, including parcels from mature Massale Selection Syrah, 470 and Waldron clonal material. Shadecloth on the afternoon side of the vines builds structural complexity in the fruit.
Production Notes
Handpicked, berry sorted and emptied to small wooden and stainless steel fermenters via gravity. We incorporated 31% whole bunches and wild fermentation to build structure and texture and provide the framework on which to express the opulence and spice of Syrah. The wine spent two weeks on skins prior to pressing directly to fine grained, large format French oak (13% new) and was aged for 11 months prior to bottling.
