2019 Swinney Syrah

2019 reviews below

Campbell Mattinson, www.winefront.com, October 2019
Syrah from Frankland River from one of the best grape growers in the area. Beautiful red. Composed, flush with berried fruit, peppery, ferrous, smoky and more simply delicious. It’s all set on tight strings of tannin but the succulence of the fruit keeps the momentum high. Peppercorn, plum, blueberry and florals; what a combination. Gorgeous. 95 pts

Jeremy Oliver, www.jeremyoliver.com, Aug 2019
Medium to fullish in weight, earthy and Cornas-like; fiery, peppery and faintly leathery, with black and red berries, cedary oak, chilli and gravelly tannins finishing long, ferrous and savoury. 95 pts

Huon Hooke, www.therealreview.com, Aug 2019
Deep, bright red/purple colour with a sweet, ripe blueberry to blackberry aroma. Traces of ironstone. A superb array of spices and berry fruits, pepper among them. Great elegance and persistence; a very stylish modern Aussie shiraz which justifies the syrah name.  96 pts

Wine Profile
Tasting Notes
Dark and saturated with an inky, richly fragrant fruit profile combining Szechuan pepper, anise, blueberries and old fashioned salted liquorice. This is medium to full-bodied wine with a cool slate-like mouthfeel complimenting the deep mulberry fruits and allspice. A hint of fine cedary oak lends support to a wine of delicious length and drinkability. Plush, rich and satisfying.

Production Notes
The fruit was hand-picked from selected parcels of Syrah vines on our Frankland River vineyard, berry sorted and emptied to small wooden and stainless steel fermenters via gravity with the inclusion of a small percentage of Grenache and Mourvedre. We incorporated 18% whole bunches and wild fermentation to build structure and texture and provide the framework on which to express the opulence and spice of Syrah. The wine spent two weeks on skins prior to pressing directly to fine grained large format French oak (19% new) and was aged for 11 months before bottling. The wine was made with minimum effective Sulphites, it is unfined and minimally filtered.
